BE Food Engineering

BE Food Engineering is a four-year undergraduate degree applying process engineering to food production — the engineering of processing, preservation, packaging and food plant operations. It is offered by very few Pakistani universities.

BE, BS or BSc Engineering?

Pakistani universities award the four-year undergraduate engineering degree under several names — BE, BS Engineering and BSc Engineering. They are equivalent in substance and duration, and what matters for professional practice is Pakistan Engineering Council accreditation of the specific programme, not the letters in the title.

What You’ll Study

Coursework covers food chemistry and microbiology, unit operations in food processing, heat and mass transfer applied to food, thermal processing and preservation, refrigeration and cold chain, food packaging technology, plant design and food safety and quality systems.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Pakistan has a substantial food processing industry — dairy, confectionery, beverages, edible oils, bakery and packaged foods — sitting on a large agricultural base. Graduates work in food plant process engineering, production and operations management, new product and process development, quality assurance and food safety, packaging engineering, and cold chain and logistics engineering.

Two areas carry particular weight. Post-harvest and cold chain engineering addresses substantial losses between field and market, where reducing waste is often more economical than increasing production. And food safety compliance is mandated rather than discretionary, particularly for exporters meeting international buyer standards, which makes it reliable employment.

Engineering programmes in Pakistan should be accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council, since PEC registration is expected for professional practice. Accreditation attaches to a specific programme at a specific university, so verify the status of the exact programme before enrolling.

Admission Requirements

FSc Pre-Engineering or an equivalent qualification with Physics and Mathematics, plus the engineering entrance test used by the university. Merit combines intermediate results with test performance.
