Admissions

Admission cycles in Pakistan are not synchronised. Institutions set their own dates within provincial and regulatory constraints, and the same university may run different timetables for different faculties. This page tracks what is currently open and what is coming.

When admissions happen

The main intake follows the HSSC (Intermediate) results, which places the busiest period between roughly June and September. A smaller spring intake runs in January and February at institutions operating a two-semester admission model. Medical and dental admission is tied to the national MDCAT schedule and moves as that moves.

Because the window after results is short and several deadlines overlap, the practical constraint is usually document preparation rather than eligibility. Domicile certificates, attested transcripts and equivalence certificates for non-HSSC qualifications all take time to obtain, and applications fail for missing paperwork far more often than for weak grades.

Entry tests

  • MDCAT — national, required for MBBS and BDS, conducted under Pakistan Medical and Dental Council rules.
  • ECAT — engineering admission in Punjab, administered by UET Lahore.
  • ETEA — engineering and medical entry testing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
  • LAT — required for admission to LLB programmes.
  • GAT — the general graduate admission test, used for MS, MPhil and PhD entry alongside institutional equivalents.
  • Institutional tests — NET at NUST, and comparable in-house tests at other institutions, often with several sittings per cycle.

Several institutions accept more than one of these, and some accept their own test only. Check what the specific programme requires rather than assuming a national standard.

Equivalence and domicile

Applicants holding A-Levels or another non-HSSC qualification need an equivalence certificate from the Inter Board Coordination Commission before most institutions will process an application. Start that early — it is a common cause of missed deadlines.

Public-sector institutions allocate a share of seats on a domicile basis. Where your domicile certificate was issued determines which quota you compete under, and open-merit seats for out-of-province applicants can be limited.

Confirm before you act

Admission dates and criteria change every cycle and are occasionally revised mid-cycle. Everything listed here records where it came from, but the institution’s own admissions page is always the authoritative source for a deadline you are planning around.
