BA (Honours) History

BA (Honours) History is a four-year undergraduate degree studying the past in order to interpret the present — training students in archival research, source criticism and evidence-based argument rather than memorisation of dates.

What You’ll Study

Around 130 credit hours. Coursework covers South Asian and Pakistani history, world and comparative history, historiography and historical methods, and thematic areas such as colonialism, political and economic history, and social history. Archival research and source evaluation are the practical core, and they build a genuinely uncommon skill: assessing conflicting evidence and constructing a defensible account from it.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Graduates work in education and academia, research institutes and think tanks, journalism and documentary media, museums, archives and heritage management, publishing, and the civil service. History is a well-established route into CSS preparation, overlapping with several examination subjects.

Heritage and archival work is a small but real sector in Pakistan given the country’s archaeological and architectural inheritance. As with other humanities degrees, academic careers require postgraduate study, and employability improves markedly with complementary skills in writing, languages or research methods.

Admission Requirements

Intermediate or A-Levels (or an IBCC-certified equivalent), plus the admission test used by the university concerned — LUMS runs its own SAT-style paper-based test and also accepts SAT scores. Humanities and social science programmes generally weight writing and critical-reasoning ability heavily. Check each university’s admissions page for the current cycle.
