MPhil American Studies

An MPhil in American Studies is a two-year interdisciplinary research master’s examining the United States — its politics, foreign policy, society, history and culture — combining area expertise with disciplinary method and a research thesis.

MPhil or MS?

Pakistani universities use both titles for the two-year research master’s that follows a four-year bachelor’s, and HEC treats them as equivalent 18-year qualifications. MPhil is the more traditional and usually more thesis-weighted designation. Confirm which applies to your discipline and whether a thesis is compulsory, since that governs PhD eligibility.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Graduates work in policy research institutes and think tanks, foreign affairs analysis and government policy roles, journalism and international commentary, international organisations and exchange programmes, and university teaching, where an MPhil is the minimum for lecturing positions.

This is a specialised field with a modest number of dedicated positions, so it works best combined with strong analytical writing and demonstrable published output. It also provides a well-defined research foundation for doctoral study, including through international scholarship routes.
