About
Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) is a federal public research university in Islamabad and consistently Pakistan’s highest-ranked institution — placed 354th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026, ahead of every other Pakistani university. It is unusual among Pakistani universities in having grown downward from research rather than upward from teaching.
Degree Programs
Teaching and research are organised into three teaching faculties plus an affiliated medical faculty:
- Faculty of Natural Sciences — Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Earth Sciences, Electronics, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and the Institute of Information Technology.
- Faculty of Biological Sciences — Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences, Microbiology, Pharmacy, Plant Sciences, Zoology, and the National Centre for Bioinformatics.
- Faculty of Social Sciences — Anthropology, Defence & Strategic Studies, English, History, the School of Economics, School of Law, School of Politics & International Relations, School of Sociology, the Quaid-i-Azam School of Management Sciences, and several national institutes covering Psychology, Pakistan Studies, Historical & Cultural Research, Intelligence and Security Studies, Gender Studies and Area Studies.
- Faculty of Medicine — delivered through affiliated institutions rather than on the main campus.
Programmes
QAU offers undergraduate BS degrees across roughly 32 disciplines, along with a five-year Pharm-D and a five-year LLB. At graduate level it runs MPhil and MS programmes across a similar spread of disciplines, and PhD programmes in around 30 fields. Because of its research origins, the graduate and doctoral catalogue is unusually broad for a Pakistani university — particularly in the social sciences, where it hosts national institutes in areas few other universities cover, such as Defence & Strategic Studies, Intelligence and Security Studies, and Pakistan Studies.
Undergraduate programmes run in both morning and evening sessions, and a lateral entry route allows admission into the fifth semester of a BS for students with relevant prior qualifications. The full catalogue, with links to each programme, is listed below.

History
The university was established in July 1967 under an Act of the National Assembly, originally named Islamabad University. It began by offering only PhD and MPhil programmes — that is, it started as a purely postgraduate research institution — and only later extended to master’s, graduate and, most recently, undergraduate degrees. That sequence still shapes the institution: research depth and doctoral supervision are its strongest assets, and its reputation rests more on research output than on undergraduate teaching scale.
As a federal public sector university it admits a measured number of students from every region of the country, and it attracts a substantial international student population alongside collaborations with universities in Europe, South Asia and the United States, and with institutions including UNESCO and IRSIP.

Campuses
The university occupies a single large campus in Islamabad, at the foot of the Margalla Hills, with libraries, hostel accommodation, sports facilities, medical services and transport. Unlike several of Pakistan’s larger private universities, QAU operates from one location rather than a multi-campus network.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Quaid-i-Azam University recognized by HEC?
Yes. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan lists Quaid-i-Azam University as a recognised institution, which means its degrees can be attested by the HEC and are accepted for further study and public-sector employment. Recognition applies to the institution; individual programmes may additionally require accreditation from a professional council.
Is Quaid-i-Azam University private or government?
Quaid-i-Azam University is a public-sector institution. Public institutions generally charge lower fees than private ones because they receive government funding, and admission is correspondingly more competitive on merit.
What entry test is required for admission to Quaid-i-Azam University?
Requirements vary by programme. Most undergraduate intakes are based on HSSC or an equivalent qualification, and many institutions add their own entry test or interview. Confirm the current requirement on the institution's own admissions page, since criteria and closing dates change each cycle.
Does HEC recognition mean every programme at Quaid-i-Azam University is accredited?
No. HEC recognition confirms the institution is chartered to award degrees. Individual programmes in regulated fields need separate accreditation — the Pakistan Engineering Council for engineering, PMDC for medicine and dentistry, the Pakistan Bar Council for law, NCEAC for computing. A programme can sit inside a recognised institution without holding that professional accreditation, so check the specific programme before enrolling.
Where is Quaid-i-Azam University located?
Quaid-i-Azam University is located in Islamabad, Islamabad. Full address and contact details are listed above; the official website is qau.edu.pk.
