BS Archaeology is a four-year undergraduate degree studying past human societies through their material remains — excavation, artefact analysis, dating and interpretation of sites and landscapes.
Why Pakistan Is Unusual for This Field
Pakistan holds an exceptional archaeological inheritance: the Indus Valley Civilisation sites including Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, the Gandhara Buddhist heritage of Taxila and the northwest, and extensive Islamic-period architecture. Few countries offer comparable material within their own borders, which makes archaeology here a field with genuine primary research opportunity rather than only secondary study.
What You’ll Study
Coursework covers archaeological theory and method, excavation and field techniques, artefact typology and analysis, the prehistory and history of South Asia, museology and conservation, and increasingly scientific dating methods, GIS and remote sensing, with field school training.
Career Scope in Pakistan
Destinations include federal and provincial departments of archaeology, museums and heritage conservation, excavation and survey projects, cultural resource management and heritage impact assessment for development projects, tourism and site interpretation, and academia.
The realistic picture: this is a small field with limited positions, concentrated in government departments, museums and universities, and public-sector hiring is irregular. Graduates who add technical capability — GIS, remote sensing, conservation science, or documentation and photogrammetry — are considerably better placed, as are those willing to work in heritage consultancy attached to development projects, which is where newer funded work tends to appear.
Admission Requirements
Intermediate or an equivalent qualification, plus the admission or aptitude test used by the university concerned. Social science programmes normally weight English proficiency and analytical writing. Check each university’s admissions page for the current cycle.
