MPhil Biochemistry

An MPhil in Biochemistry is a two-year research master’s studying the chemistry of living systems at an advanced level, combining coursework with laboratory research and a thesis.

Research Areas

Common specialisations include enzymology and protein chemistry, molecular biology and gene expression, clinical and medical biochemistry, structural biology, metabolic regulation and disease, and natural products and drug discovery support. Laboratory infrastructure varies considerably between departments and directly limits what research is feasible — assess this before choosing a supervisor.

MPhil or MS?

Pakistani universities use both titles for the two-year research master’s that follows a four-year bachelor’s degree, and HEC treats them as equivalent 18-year qualifications. MPhil is the more traditional designation and is usually the more research- and thesis-weighted of the two; MS is more common at newer and private institutions and sometimes offers a coursework-heavy track. Several universities admit to both through a single stream — check which designation applies to your discipline and whether a thesis is compulsory, since that determines your eligibility and readiness for PhD study.

Career Scope in Pakistan

An MPhil is effectively the entry qualification for research positions. Graduates work in university and institute research groups, pharmaceutical R&D and quality control, clinical and diagnostic laboratory supervision, biotechnology companies, food and agricultural analysis, and regulatory and testing bodies, alongside college and university teaching.

Graduates with strong molecular technique — protein purification, PCR and molecular cloning, chromatography and spectroscopic analysis — and increasingly with data-handling capability are the most competitive, since genomics and computational approaches have become central to biochemical research.

Admission Requirements
