BS Chemistry is a four-year undergraduate degree covering the composition, structure and transformation of matter. Chemistry sits between the physical and biological sciences and underpins much of Pakistan’s industrial base — pharmaceuticals, fertilisers, textiles, petrochemicals, paints and food processing all depend on chemistry graduates.

What You’ll Study

Programmes typically run around 130 credit hours. Core coursework spans organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, with spectroscopy, instrumental analysis and extensive laboratory training. Later electives allow specialisation toward materials chemistry, medicinal chemistry, polymer science or computational chemistry, normally with a final-year research project.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Chemistry is one of the more industrially employable pure sciences in Pakistan. Graduates work in quality control and R&D at pharmaceutical manufacturers, fertiliser and chemical plants, textile and dyeing units, food processing companies, petroleum refineries, and government testing laboratories. Analytical chemistry skills — particularly hands-on competence with HPLC, GC and spectroscopic instrumentation — are consistently in demand and often distinguish candidates for QC and R&D roles.

Research and academic careers require postgraduate study, and chemistry is well supported by HEC scholarship schemes for MS and PhD study both in Pakistan and abroad.

Admission Requirements

Intermediate (FSc/ICS) or A-Levels with the relevant science subjects, plus the admission test used by the university you are applying to — LUMS runs its own SAT-style paper-based test and also accepts SAT scores, while other universities use NET, NAT or their own entry tests. Check each university’s admissions page for the current cycle.
