About
The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) is one of Pakistan’s largest and highest-ranked universities, teaching across more than twenty constituent schools, colleges and institutes spread over campuses in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Risalpur, Karachi and Quetta. It placed 371st in the QS World University Rankings 2026, second nationally.
Degree Programs
NUST is unusual in Pakistan for operating as a federation of largely autonomous schools rather than a single campus with departments. Each institution has its own identity, admissions intake and academic culture, and several long predate the university itself — the military engineering colleges in particular have their own institutional histories.
The Islamabad main campus at Sector H-12 hosts the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (SMME), the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SCEE), the School of Chemical and Materials Engineering (SCME), the School of Natural Sciences (SNS), the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (S3H), NUST Business School (NBS), the School of Art, Design and Architecture (SADA), the Atta-ur-Rahman School of Applied Biosciences (ASAB), the School of Interdisciplinary Engineering and Sciences (SINES), NUST Law School, the Jinnah School of Public Policy and Leadership, and the US-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Energy.
Beyond Islamabad it includes the College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (CEME) and Military College of Signals (MCS) in Rawalpindi, the College of Aeronautical Engineering (CAE) and Military College of Engineering (MCE) at Risalpur, Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC) in Karachi, and the NUST Balochistan Campus in Quetta.
Programmes
The catalogue spans engineering, computing, natural sciences, business, social sciences, law, art and design, and applied biosciences, from bachelor’s through doctoral level.
Several undergraduate degrees run at more than one institution — mechanical engineering at SMME, CEME and PNEC; electrical engineering at SEECS, CEME, PNEC and MCS; civil engineering at SCEE, MCE and the Quetta campus. Because the schools differ in location, culture and intake, which one you attend matters as much as which degree you take, and applicants should treat the school as part of the decision rather than an administrative detail.
Some programmes are effectively unique in Pakistan: naval architecture and marine engineering at PNEC, avionics and aerospace engineering at CAE, geoinformatics engineering at SCEE, and quantum information science at postgraduate level. The full catalogue is listed below.
This university offers 15 engineering programmes. PEC accreditation is granted to a specific programme at a specific university — a degree accredited elsewhere is not automatically accredited here — so confirm the status of your chosen programme directly with the Pakistan Engineering Council before enrolling.

Admissions
Admission Requirements
- BS programs: Admission through the NUST Entry Test (NET), with merit calculated from the test alongside academic record. Applicants apply to a specific programme-and-institution combination rather than to the university generally.
- MS programs: A relevant 16-year degree, plus the NUST GAT or an accepted equivalent and a departmental interview. Many postgraduate programmes run in evening formats for working professionals.
- PhD programs: A relevant 18-year qualification (MS/MPhil) with a strong academic record, plus the admission test, interview and a research proposal aligned with an available supervisor.
These apply to every program at that level. Requirements specific to a program are in the Eligibility column of the Degree Programs table.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is National University of Sciences and Technology recognized by HEC?
Yes. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan lists National University of Sciences and Technology as a recognised institution, which means its degrees can be attested by the HEC and are accepted for further study and public-sector employment. Recognition applies to the institution; individual programmes may additionally require accreditation from a professional council.
Is National University of Sciences and Technology private or government?
National University of Sciences and Technology is a public-sector institution. Public institutions generally charge lower fees than private ones because they receive government funding, and admission is correspondingly more competitive on merit.
What entry test is required for admission to National University of Sciences and Technology?
Engineering admission normally requires an entry test — the ECAT in Punjab, an ETEA test in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, or an institutional test elsewhere — alongside HSSC pre-engineering results. Confirm the current requirement on the institution's own admissions page, since criteria and closing dates change each cycle.
Does HEC recognition mean every programme at National University of Sciences and Technology is accredited?
No. HEC recognition confirms the institution is chartered to award degrees. Individual programmes in regulated fields need separate accreditation — the Pakistan Engineering Council for engineering, PMDC for medicine and dentistry, the Pakistan Bar Council for law, NCEAC for computing. A programme can sit inside a recognised institution without holding that professional accreditation, so check the specific programme before enrolling.
Where is National University of Sciences and Technology located?
National University of Sciences and Technology is located in Islamabad, Islamabad. Full address and contact details are listed above; the official website is nust.edu.pk.
