BS Chemical Engineering is a four-year undergraduate degree that applies chemistry, physics and mathematics to the design and operation of industrial processes — converting raw materials into products at scale, safely and economically. It is one of the core engineering disciplines behind Pakistan’s petrochemical, fertiliser, pharmaceutical, cement and food-processing industries.

What You’ll Study

Programmes typically run 135-138 credit hours. Core coursework covers material and energy balances, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, reaction engineering, separation processes, and process control and design. Most programmes culminate in a capstone plant-design project, and many include industrial internships. Increasingly, curricula also cover process safety, energy efficiency and environmental compliance.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Chemical engineers work in oil refining and petrochemicals, fertiliser manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, cement, textiles and food processing, in roles spanning process engineering, production, quality assurance, plant operations, and health, safety and environment (HSE). Energy and environmental work — emissions control, water treatment, process efficiency and renewable fuels — is a growing area as industrial environmental compliance tightens.

Engineering programmes in Pakistan should be accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), as PEC registration is expected for many professional engineering roles; confirm the accreditation status of any programme before enrolling.

Admission Requirements

Intermediate (FSc/ICS) or A-Levels with the relevant science subjects, plus the admission test used by the university you are applying to — LUMS runs its own SAT-style paper-based test and also accepts SAT scores, while other universities use NET, NAT or their own entry tests. Check each university’s admissions page for the current cycle.

PEC accreditation is granted to this programme at each university separately — it is not a property of the degree title. The same programme can be accredited at one university and not at another, so check the row for the university you are actually applying to.
