About
The University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore (UET Lahore) is Pakistan’s oldest engineering institution and one of its largest, tracing an unbroken line back to 1921. It operates six campuses across Punjab and offers engineering, computing, architecture, planning, sciences and management programmes from bachelor’s through doctoral level.
Degree Programs
The university offers an unusually broad engineering catalogue: alongside the core civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer disciplines, it runs degrees in areas few other Pakistani universities cover, including mining engineering, petroleum and gas engineering, metallurgical and materials engineering, polymer engineering, transportation engineering, geological engineering, textile engineering and architectural engineering.
Beyond engineering it offers architecture and city and regional planning, computing degrees spanning computer science, software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence and cyber security, natural sciences, business and management, and two-year associate degree programmes. Postgraduate provision is extensive, with master’s degrees across most engineering specialisations and doctoral programmes in more than thirty disciplines. The full catalogue is listed below.
This university offers 20 engineering programmes. PEC accreditation is granted to a specific programme at a specific university — a degree accredited elsewhere is not automatically accredited here — so confirm the status of your chosen programme directly with the Pakistan Engineering Council before enrolling.

- PhD programs: A relevant 18-year qualification (MSc/MS/MPhil) with a strong academic record, plus the doctoral admission test, interview and a research proposal.
These apply to every program at that level. Requirements specific to a program are in the Eligibility column of the Degree Programs table.
History
The institution began in 1921 as the Mughalpura Technical College, teaching just two disciplines — electrical and mechanical engineering. In 1923 it was renamed the Maclagan Engineering College after Sir Edwards Maclagan, then Governor of Punjab, who laid the foundation stone of the Main Block that still stands on the Lahore campus. From 1932 it was affiliated with the University of the Punjab for the award of engineering degrees, and by independence in 1947 it was running established BSc programmes in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.
In 1954 it launched the country’s first-ever degree in mining engineering. The decisive expansion came in 1962, when the college became the West Pakistan University of Engineering & Technology and rapidly added chemical engineering, petroleum and gas engineering, metallurgical engineering, architecture, and city and regional planning. Master’s programmes followed through the 1970s and doctoral programmes later. The institution took its present name in 1972.
Its influence extends beyond its own campuses: the engineering college UET established at Taxila in 1975 became an independent institution — the University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila — in 1998.
Research and Facilities
Research is coordinated through the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC). One distinctive piece of infrastructure: in 2004 the university commissioned its own power generation unit, initially 2 megawatts and later expanded to 3 megawatts, making it the first educational institution in the country to generate its own electricity — a practical response to the power shortages that have periodically disrupted Pakistani campuses.
Disciplines
Campuses
UET Lahore runs six campuses. The Main Campus sits on GT Road in Lahore, alongside a Model Town campus in the city. The Faisalabad campus opened in 2006 and the New Campus at Kala Shah Kaku (KSK), known as the City Campus, in 2007. A campus at Narowal followed in 2012, established to develop technical skills in that district. Rachna College of Engineering & Technology at Gujranwala is a constituent college following the main campus curriculum and academic policies.
Programme availability differs by campus — several degrees run at more than one location while others are specific to a single campus — so confirm with the relevant campus before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is University of Engineering & Technology recognized by HEC?
Yes. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan lists University of Engineering & Technology as a recognised institution, which means its degrees can be attested by the HEC and are accepted for further study and public-sector employment. Recognition applies to the institution; individual programmes may additionally require accreditation from a professional council.
Is University of Engineering & Technology private or government?
University of Engineering & Technology is a public-sector institution. Public institutions generally charge lower fees than private ones because they receive government funding, and admission is correspondingly more competitive on merit.
What entry test is required for admission to University of Engineering & Technology?
Engineering admission normally requires an entry test — the ECAT in Punjab, an ETEA test in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, or an institutional test elsewhere — alongside HSSC pre-engineering results. Confirm the current requirement on the institution's own admissions page, since criteria and closing dates change each cycle.
Does HEC recognition mean every programme at University of Engineering & Technology is accredited?
No. HEC recognition confirms the institution is chartered to award degrees. Individual programmes in regulated fields need separate accreditation — the Pakistan Engineering Council for engineering, PMDC for medicine and dentistry, the Pakistan Bar Council for law, NCEAC for computing. A programme can sit inside a recognised institution without holding that professional accreditation, so check the specific programme before enrolling.
Where is University of Engineering & Technology located?
University of Engineering & Technology is located in Lahore, Punjab. Full address and contact details are listed above; the official website is uet.edu.pk.
