An MPhil in Applied Physics is a two-year research degree applying physics to practical and technological problems — materials, devices, instrumentation and energy systems.

What You’ll Study

Coursework and research cover solid state and materials physics, optics and photonics, electronics and instrumentation, computational physics, energy materials and devices, and characterisation techniques, culminating in a thesis.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Graduates work in research at national laboratories and universities, materials and device development, instrumentation and metrology, energy and semiconductor-related research, quality and testing laboratories, and teaching.

A significant share of physics postgraduates also move into computational and quantitative careers — data science, modelling and simulation — where the mathematical and programming training transfers directly and typically pays more than laboratory positions.

Entry requirements

Admission requires a 16-year qualification — a four-year bachelor’s degree, or a two-year bachelor’s followed by a two-year master’s — normally with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 out of 4.0. Most institutions require the GAT (General) or an accepted institutional equivalent, commonly with a qualifying score of 50%. Some departments add a subject test or interview.

MS and MPhil are equivalent qualifications. Both are two-year research-oriented master’s degrees of roughly 30 credit hours including a thesis, and both qualify a graduate to apply for doctoral study. Universities choose between the two titles by convention rather than by any difference in standing.

Choosing where to study

For a research-oriented postgraduate degree, supervisor availability in your intended area matters more than the institution’s general reputation — ask before applying rather than after admission. Where a programme offers both a thesis and a coursework-only route, the thesis route is the safer choice if you may continue to doctoral study.

Evening and weekend programmes are widely available for working students. Where one is offered, confirm that the qualification awarded is identical to the regular-stream degree and is not differentiated on the transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does applied physics differ from physics?

Applied physics directs the same fundamental training toward practical and technological problems — materials, devices, instrumentation and energy systems — rather than fundamental questions, which maps more directly onto industrial and applied research roles.
