BS Mining Engineering is a four-year undergraduate degree covering the extraction of minerals and coal from the earth — deposit evaluation, mine design, drilling and blasting, ground control, ventilation and mine safety. Pakistan’s first mining engineering degree was launched at UET Lahore in 1954, and it remains a discipline offered by only a handful of institutions.

What You’ll Study

Coursework covers mining geology and mineral deposits, surface and underground mining methods, rock mechanics and ground control, drilling and blasting, mine ventilation, mine surveying, mineral economics, and mine health and safety, normally including field visits and mine site training.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Pakistan holds substantial mineral resources — coal at Thar, salt at Khewra, marble and granite in the north, limestone for a large cement industry, and copper and gold deposits in Balochistan. Graduates work in coal and mineral mining operations, cement raw material quarrying, exploration and resource evaluation, mine planning and design, and mining safety and regulatory roles.

Two realistic points. Mining work is often located remotely and involves site-based rather than city postings, which suits some candidates and not others. And the sector is smaller than mainstream engineering fields, but so is the number of qualified graduates — specialists face limited competition for the positions that exist, and mining qualifications also travel well to international mining markets.

Engineering programmes in Pakistan should be accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council, since PEC registration is expected for professional engineering practice and for many public-sector posts. Confirm the accreditation status of the specific programme and campus with the university and PEC before enrolling.

Admission Requirements

FSc Pre-Engineering or an equivalent qualification with Physics and Mathematics, plus the engineering entrance test used by the university — ECAT in Punjab, or an institutional test elsewhere. Merit normally combines intermediate results with test performance.

PEC accreditation is granted to this programme at each university separately — it is not a property of the degree title. The same programme can be accredited at one university and not at another, so check the row for the university you are actually applying to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the scope of Mining Engineering in Pakistan?

Coal and mineral mining including Thar coal, cement raw material quarrying, exploration and resource evaluation, mine planning and design, and mining safety and regulation. Pakistan holds substantial coal, salt, marble, limestone and copper resources.

Is Mining Engineering a good career choice?

It is a smaller field than mainstream engineering, but qualified graduates are also fewer, so competition for available roles is limited. Expect site-based work in remote locations rather than city postings, and note the qualification transfers well to international mining markets.
