A PhD in Anthropology is a research doctorate producing original ethnographic research on human societies and cultures, normally built on extended fieldwork.
Research Areas
Common areas include development and applied anthropology, medical anthropology, gender and kinship, urbanisation and migration, environmental anthropology, religion and ritual, and ethnographic methodology. Pakistan offers unusually rich and under-documented fieldwork settings — mountain and pastoral communities, rapid urban change, internal migration, and diverse religious and ethnic configurations.
Career Scope in Pakistan
Other destinations include senior research and technical advisory roles in the development sector, policy research institutes, social safeguards leadership on large infrastructure programmes, international organisations, and international postdoctoral research.
Entry requirements
Doctoral admission requires an 18-year qualification — an MS, MPhil or recognised equivalent — normally with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0. Most institutions require the GAT Subject test or an accepted equivalent, setting their own qualifying score. Admission is not automatic on meeting the threshold: departments admit against supervisor capacity, and the Higher Education Commission caps how many doctoral candidates one supervisor may hold at a time.
Beyond admission, the degree involves coursework, a comprehensive examination that must be passed before research formally begins, a defended proposal, and published research prior to the final defence. The publication requirement is where timelines most often slip, because journal review cycles are outside a candidate’s control.
Funding and supervision
Domestic doctoral study is funded mainly through Higher Education Commission indigenous scholarships, university teaching or research assistantships, and project-linked positions attached to a supervisor’s funded research. Overseas study runs largely through HEC overseas schemes, Fulbright, DAAD and comparable foreign government programmes. All of these close earlier than the admission cycle itself, often by several months, so funding usually has to be arranged before an offer rather than after it.
For doctoral study the supervisor matters more than the institution’s overall standing. Before applying, establish whether someone active in this area has capacity, what their current students are working on, and how long recent students have taken to finish. A department publishing consistently in the field is a better signal than a strong overall university ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Pakistan a good setting for anthropological fieldwork?
It offers rich and comparatively under-documented settings — mountain and pastoral communities, rapid urbanisation, internal migration, and diverse religious and ethnic configurations — where original ethnographic work remains genuinely possible.
How is a PhD funded in Pakistan?
Most doctoral students are funded rather than self-financing. HEC's Indigenous PhD Fellowship provides roughly PKR 30,000-50,000 per month for study in Pakistan, with overseas scholarships and the US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor available for study abroad. Some universities fund their own candidates. Confirm current terms on hec.gov.pk.
