An MPhil in Psychology is a two-year research master’s combining advanced coursework with supervised research and a thesis. It is the qualification level at which psychology becomes professionally practicable in Pakistan.
Clinical Psychology Is a Distinct Track
This matters more than any other point. An MPhil in Clinical Psychology — with supervised clinical training and placement — is the standard route to practising as a clinical psychologist. A general or research-track MPhil in Psychology is not equivalent and does not by itself qualify a graduate for clinical practice. If clinical work is the goal, confirm that the specific programme includes supervised clinical training before enrolling.
Research Areas
Common specialisations include clinical and counselling psychology, industrial and organisational psychology, educational psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, health psychology, and psychological assessment and psychometrics.
MPhil or MS?
Pakistani universities use both titles for the two-year research master’s that follows a four-year bachelor’s, and HEC treats them as equivalent 18-year qualifications. MPhil is the more traditional and usually more thesis-weighted designation. Confirm which applies to your discipline and whether a thesis is compulsory, since that governs PhD eligibility.
Career Scope in Pakistan
Mental health awareness and service provision have both expanded, increasing demand for qualified clinical psychologists in hospitals, clinics, schools and private practice. Non-clinical routes include organisational psychology and human resources, educational psychology and school counselling, research and assessment roles, market and consumer research, and university teaching, where an MPhil is the minimum for lecturing.
Admission Requirements
A minimum of 16 years of education in a relevant discipline, plus the university’s subject test and usually an interview. Check the specific programme page for current requirements and deadlines.
