BS Materials Science is a four-year undergraduate degree studying why materials behave as they do — the relationship between structure, processing, properties and performance across metals, ceramics, polymers and composites.

What You’ll Study

Coursework covers crystal structure and bonding, phase diagrams and transformations, mechanical behaviour of materials, materials characterisation techniques, metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, corrosion and degradation, and materials selection and failure analysis.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Graduates work in materials testing and characterisation laboratories, quality assurance in manufacturing, failure analysis and root-cause investigation, steel and metals production, cement and ceramics, and increasingly in energy materials and coatings.

Failure analysis is the distinctive value. When a component fails prematurely — a pipeline corrodes, a weld cracks, a bearing seizes — someone must determine why and specify a fix. That capability is scarce and expensive to lack, and Pakistani industry has a persistent materials failure problem. Research and development roles generally require postgraduate study, and materials science is well supported by HEC scholarship schemes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between materials science and metallurgy?

Metallurgy focuses specifically on metals — extraction, processing and behaviour. Materials science covers a wider range including ceramics, polymers and composites alongside metals, studying structure-property relationships across all material classes.

What is failure analysis and why does it matter?

Determining why a component failed — corrosion, fatigue, poor material selection or processing defects — and specifying a fix. It is a scarce, valuable capability, and materials failure is a persistent and costly problem across Pakistani industry.
