An MPhil in Water Resources Management is a two-year research degree addressing water allocation, governance and policy — how a finite, contested resource is shared, priced and regulated.
What You’ll Study
Coursework and research cover integrated water resources management, water policy and law, water economics, transboundary water issues, institutional analysis, and climate change and water security.
Career Scope in Pakistan
Many of Pakistan’s water problems are institutional rather than technical — inter-provincial allocation disputes, canal water distribution and theft, groundwater treated as open-access, and agricultural water pricing that discourages efficiency. Research here addresses governance failures that engineering alone cannot fix.
Graduates work in water policy and planning bodies, donor-funded water governance programmes, research institutes and think tanks, international organisations, irrigation department management, and doctoral study.
Entry requirements
Admission requires a 16-year qualification — a four-year bachelor’s degree, or a two-year bachelor’s followed by a two-year master’s — normally with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 out of 4.0. Most institutions require the GAT (General) or an accepted institutional equivalent, commonly with a qualifying score of 50%. Some departments add a subject test or interview.
MS and MPhil are equivalent qualifications. Both are two-year research-oriented master’s degrees of roughly 30 credit hours including a thesis, and both qualify a graduate to apply for doctoral study. Universities choose between the two titles by convention rather than by any difference in standing.
Choosing where to study
For a research-oriented postgraduate degree, supervisor availability in your intended area matters more than the institution’s general reputation — ask before applying rather than after admission. Where a programme offers both a thesis and a coursework-only route, the thesis route is the safer choice if you may continue to doctoral study.
Evening and weekend programmes are widely available for working students. Where one is offered, confirm that the qualification awarded is identical to the regular-stream degree and is not differentiated on the transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Pakistan's water problems technical or institutional?
Substantially institutional — inter-provincial allocation disputes, canal distribution and theft, groundwater governed as an open-access resource, and water pricing that discourages efficiency are governance failures that engineering alone cannot resolve.
