DPT Scope in Pakistan: Salary, Careers and the Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree

If you are weighing healthcare careers after FSc Pre-Medical or A Levels, the DPT scope in Pakistan is worth understanding beyond the salary estimates that circulate online. Doctor of Physical Therapy is a five-year professional degree combining medical sciences, rehabilitation, clinical training and patient care, and it leads into hospitals, rehabilitation centers, sports facilities, clinics, home-based care and private practice.
The questions that matter go past the degree title: how DPT is regulated, what you study, whether MDCAT is required, what it costs, and what the work actually pays in government and private employment.
Short answer: the DPT scope in Pakistan
DPT has a broad healthcare scope in Pakistan, strongest in hospital rehabilitation, private clinics, sports and home-based therapy. Government posts are advertised in Basic Pay Scale grades such as BPS-17, while private pay varies widely by employer, city and experience. Indeed’s average physiotherapist salary in Pakistan is Rs 37,286 a month, updated 10 September 2026.
What is DPT?
DPT stands for Doctor of Physical Therapy. It is a professional healthcare degree covering the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of people with movement limitations, injuries, pain and neurological conditions.
HEC’s Curriculum for Doctor of Physical Therapy 2025 defines it as a five-year, semester-based degree of at least 189 credit hours over 10 regular semesters, with a maximum of 7.5 years to complete. The credit hours break down into 96 for major courses, 34 general education, 31 interdisciplinary, 22 for supervised clinical practice, 3 for a supervised internship and 3 for a capstone or research project.
HEC sets the standard name for all NQF level 6 qualifications in the discipline as “Doctor of Physical Therapy”, and from Spring 2026 no new intake may be admitted to an annual-system DPT.
The program is more clinical than the name suggests. You study anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, pathology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery, therapeutic exercise, electrotherapy, and musculoskeletal, neurological, sports and cardiopulmonary physical therapy. The 2025 curriculum also adds Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, evidence-based practice and clinical decision-making.
Is DPT a medical degree?
DPT is a healthcare and allied health professional degree, not the same qualification as MBBS. A physical therapist works on physical function, movement and rehabilitation through assessment, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy and patient education.
HEC’s curriculum allows graduates whose degree is verified by HEC to use the prefix “Dr.” provided “PT” follows the name, in the format Dr. [NAME], PT. That is a professional title, not a medical doctor’s qualification. Universities also award a Practice Certificate on completion, for professional recognition in the healthcare industry.
Duration and clinical training
The degree runs five years across 10 semesters. Clinical exposure is a large part of it: six supervised clinical practices totaling 22 credit hours, plus a separate three-credit-hour supervised internship that cannot be substituted with coursework, capstone or research.
HEC also requires a department launching DPT to hold affiliation with a minimum 200-bedded general hospital with a fully equipped physical therapy department, and applies that rule to every campus and affiliated college.
This matters when comparing universities. A cheaper DPT can mean weaker clinical exposure, which is the part of the degree that makes you employable.
DPT subjects semester by semester
Course titles vary a little between universities, because HEC allows institutions to tailor content while meeting the minimum curriculum. This follows the 2025 HEC scheme of studies.
| Semester | Major subjects and important courses |
|---|---|
| 1 | Anatomy I, Physiology I, Kinesiology I, Functional English, Natural Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Understanding of Holy Quran I |
| 2 | Anatomy II, Physiology II, Kinesiology II, Quantitative Reasoning I, Expository Writing, Pakistan Studies, Understanding of Holy Quran II |
| 3 | Anatomy III, Physiology III, Medical Physics, Principles of Biochemistry, Applications of ICT, Quantitative Reasoning II |
| 4 | Neuro Anatomy, Biomechanics and Ergonomics, Human Psychology, Ideology and Constitution of Pakistan, Civics and Community Engagement, Entrepreneurship, Islamic Studies |
| 5 | Exercise Physiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics I, Physical Agents and Electrotherapy I, Community Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pathology and Microbiology I, Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, Supervised Clinical Practice I |
| 6 | Pharmacology and Therapeutics II, Physical Agents and Electrotherapy II, Therapeutic Exercises and Techniques, Pathology and Microbiology II, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Supervised Clinical Practice II |
| 7 | Medicine I, Surgery I, Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy, Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, Scientific Inquiry and Research Methods, Supervised Clinical Practice III |
| 8 | Neurological Physical Therapy, Medicine II, Surgery II, Sports Physical Therapy, Biostatistics, Professional Practice in Healthcare, Supervised Clinical Practice IV |
| 9 | Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Clinical Decision Making and Differential Diagnosis, Emergency Procedures in Physical Therapy, Evidence Based Practice, Supervised Clinical Practice V, Capstone or Research Project |
| 10 | Manual Therapy, Integumentary Physical Therapy, Women’s Health Physical Therapy, Pediatric and Neonatal Physical Therapy, Geriatric Physical Therapy, Supervised Clinical Practice VI |
This is why DPT should not be read as an exercise or massage qualification. The curriculum runs through anatomy, physiology, medicine, surgery, pathology, pharmacology, rehabilitation science, clinical reasoning and supervised practice.
Registration and recognition
Registration is the part most DPT career articles skip.
The Allied Health Professionals Council is the federal body that regulates allied health education and maintains the register of allied health professionals, under the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. Since 21 March 2025 it accepts registrations only through its online portal, and institutions have had to apply online since 10 March 2026.
So do not pick a DPT college because its website says it offers DPT. Before paying anything, check that the institution is recognized by HEC, that the program meets the professional registration requirements, that it appears in AHPC’s institution lists, and that it has real clinical affiliations and supervised training.
HEC recognition and professional registration are different things. Academic status alone is not proof that every professional requirement is satisfied.
DPT scope in Pakistan: where the work is
The DPT scope in Pakistan reaches well past a hospital physiotherapy department.
Hospitals. Rehabilitation for patients recovering from surgery, injuries, neurological conditions and orthopedic problems. Government hospitals carry established physiotherapist posts, advertised in Basic Pay Scale grades.
Rehabilitation centers. The most direct route after DPT, working with stroke, spinal injury, orthopedic and neurological patients.
Private clinics. Many physiotherapists work in private clinics or open their own. Income then depends on patient volume, session pricing, location, reputation and costs rather than a fixed salary.
Sports and fitness. Sports physical therapy is part of the HEC curriculum, and leads to sports rehabilitation and injury prevention work with facilities, clubs and athletes.
Home-based therapy. Treatment at patients’ homes, especially for elderly patients and people recovering from surgery or neurological events. Rates vary by location, experience and travel, so treat any single nationwide per-session figure with suspicion.
Teaching and research. After postgraduate study, university teaching and research. The curriculum leans on scientific inquiry, research methods, evidence-based practice and a capstone project.
Where DPT graduates work
UniAssist records DPT at 11 universities, with duration, eligibility and published fees on the DPT universities and fees page. Fees differ sharply between public and private institutions, and between campuses of the same university, so compare them there rather than working from a single national figure.
What the degree costs matters, but so does what you can do with it. Employers of physical therapists in Pakistan fall into a few groups, and they hire on different terms:
| Employer | What the work looks like | How you are paid |
|---|---|---|
| Government hospitals and health facilities | Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, often high patient volume | Basic Pay Scale grade plus allowances, advertised per post |
| Private hospitals | Post-surgical, orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation | Monthly salary, sometimes with evening clinic hours |
| Rehabilitation centers | Stroke, spinal injury and long-term neurological care | Monthly salary |
| Private clinics | Musculoskeletal pain, sports injuries, posture and mobility | Salary, per-session rates or a share of fees |
| Sports organizations and gyms | Injury prevention, conditioning and return-to-play rehabilitation | Salary, retainer or per-event work |
| Home-based practice | Elderly patients and post-operative recovery at home | Per visit, varying by city and travel |
| Universities | Teaching and research after postgraduate study | Academic pay scales |
Most of the DPT scope in Pakistan sits in the first three or four of those groups for new graduates. Teaching, sports and independent practice tend to come after a few years of clinical work and, in the case of teaching, an MS or PhD.
Career progression after DPT
The first two years usually decide the rest. Entry-level roles are general: you rotate through musculoskeletal, neurological and post-surgical cases, and you build speed at assessment and treatment planning.
From there the paths separate. Clinical specialization means going deeper into one area, often with an MS in a field such as musculoskeletal, neurological or sports physical therapy. Independent practice means taking on the business of a clinic, which pays differently and carries different risk. Teaching and research follow postgraduate study. Hospital seniority means supervising a department and its juniors, usually in the public sector where the pay grade rises with the post.
Within the DPT scope in Pakistan, pay follows the path rather than the degree. A therapist with five years in one specialization, a steady referral network and a recognized postgraduate qualification is in a different market from a new graduate, even though both hold the same DPT.
DPT salary in Pakistan
There is no single DPT salary. What you earn depends on whether you work for the government, a private hospital, a clinic, a rehabilitation center or yourself.
Government physiotherapist pay
Government posts are advertised in Basic Pay Scale grades, physiotherapist posts commonly at BPS-17. Under the Finance Division’s Basic Pay Scales 2026, BPS-17 runs from Rs 54,140 to Rs 136,340 in basic pay, with 20 annual increments of Rs 4,110. That replaced the 2022 scale, where BPS-17 started at Rs 45,070.
Basic pay is not the package. Allowances are added on top and vary by department, location and post, and the Finance Division keeps issuing circulars that revise them. Read the specific advertisement and the current allowance rules before comparing a government offer with a private one.
Private sector pay
Indeed’s Pakistan physiotherapist page, updated 10 September 2026 and checked on 29 September 2026, gives an average base salary of Rs 37,286 a month from 48 reported salaries, in a range from Rs 17,836 to Rs 77,950.
Individual adverts show the spread. At the time checked, Indeed listed a Karachi physiotherapist role at Rs 65,000 to Rs 75,000 a month, well above the national average on the same page.
Treat these as market indicators, not a salary scale. The sample is small, and experience, specialization, city, employer and whether you are paid per session all move the number.
Private practice
A clinic is a business, not a salary. Revenue has to cover rent, equipment, staff, utilities, marketing and taxes before anything reaches you, and income depends on patient volume and session fees. Established practices can earn far more than employed roles, and they carry the risk that goes with that.
DPT compared with Pharm-D and BS Nursing
| Factor | DPT | Pharm-D | BS Nursing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Physical rehabilitation and movement | Medicines and pharmaceutical care | Patient care and nursing |
| Standard duration | 5 years | 5 years | 4 years |
| Regulator | Allied Health Professionals Council | Pharmacy Council of Pakistan | Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council |
| Typical settings | Hospitals, rehabilitation, clinics, sports | Hospitals, pharmacies, pharmaceutical industry | Hospitals, clinics, community healthcare |
| Direct patient contact | High | Moderate, depending on role | Very high |
| Private practice | Yes | Different business models | Limited and regulated |
None is universally better. If you like movement science, rehabilitation and one-to-one treatment, DPT fits. If medicines and pharmacology interest you more, Pharm-D is a different profession. If you want continuous bedside care, nursing is a different route again. Our guide to the best field after FSc pre-medical compares all of them alongside the non-medical options.
Admission requirements
HEC’s 2025 curriculum sets 60% cumulative marks in HSSC or an IBCC-recognized equivalent, in a science group including Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology or Physiotherapy, as the basic eligibility for DPT. Universities may set higher marks and run their own admission tests.
Khyber Medical University, for example, requires at least 60% in FSc Pre-Medical for DPT and admits only candidates who have appeared in the KMU-CAT, on a merit-cum-quota basis.
Is MDCAT required for DPT?
Not as a national rule. HEC’s DPT curriculum does not prescribe MDCAT. It lets universities set higher eligibility and run their own entry tests, which is how KMU-CAT applies at KMU. That is different from MBBS and BDS, where MDCAT is a national requirement set by PMDC.
If you are planning DPT after FSc Pre-Medical, check each university’s current admission notice rather than assuming one university’s rule applies everywhere.
DPT for female students
DPT is one of the more popular healthcare degrees among women in Pakistan, and the work spans hospitals, rehabilitation centers, outpatient clinics, sports rehabilitation, teaching and private practice.
The useful questions are practical rather than general. Are you comfortable with hands-on patient care, including male patients in a hospital setting? Does the university’s clinical rotation run at hours and locations you can manage? Women’s health physical therapy, pediatrics and outpatient rehabilitation are areas where female therapists are often specifically sought, and outpatient clinics and private practice give more control over hours than hospital shift work.
Check the campus environment, the clinical affiliations, transport and internship arrangements before admission, because those decide your day-to-day experience more than the prospectus does.
Specializations after DPT
The curriculum exposes you to areas that can become postgraduate specializations: orthopedic and musculoskeletal physical therapy, neurological physical therapy, sports physical therapy, pediatric and neonatal physical therapy, geriatric physical therapy, cardiopulmonary physical therapy, women’s health physical therapy, integumentary and wound care, and community-based rehabilitation.
Specialization matters most when building a private practice or competing for focused clinical roles.
Skills that decide who succeeds
Academic knowledge is one part of being a good physical therapist. You also need patient assessment, clinical reasoning, exercise prescription, manual therapy, patient education, documentation and professional ethics, and the ability to work alongside doctors and other clinicians. HEC’s curriculum emphasizes clinical reasoning, evidence-based treatment, communication and collaboration for that reason.
If private practice is the goal, business skills matter too: scheduling, basic accounting, marketing, compliance and practice management.
Is DPT worth it after FSc Pre-Medical?
DPT fits if you want healthcare and are drawn to rehabilitation rather than medicines, surgery or general nursing. Before committing, answer five questions honestly:
- Do you actually enjoy rehabilitation and movement science?
- Are you comfortable working hands-on with patients every day?
- Can you commit to five years of study and clinical training?
- Have you checked the recognition and registration position of your chosen university?
- Have you compared realistic starting pay rather than the highest figures advertised online?
The money question cuts both ways. Private programs cost several times what public universities charge, while the average private physiotherapist salary on Indeed is Rs 37,286 a month, so weigh the total cost against the clinical quality and the pay you can realistically expect. Compare what each university charges on the DPT universities and fees page and estimate your admission position with the merit calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does DPT stand for?
DPT stands for Doctor of Physical Therapy. It is a five-year professional healthcare degree covering physical therapy, rehabilitation, movement and functional recovery. HEC's 2025 curriculum sets it at a minimum of 189 credit hours over 10 regular semesters.
What is the salary of DPT per month in Pakistan?
There is no fixed national DPT salary. Indeed reported an average physiotherapist salary of Rs 37,286 a month in Pakistan from 48 reported salaries, updated 10 September 2026, in a range of Rs 17,836 to Rs 77,950. Government posts follow Basic Pay Scales, where BPS-17 starts at Rs 54,140 in basic pay under the 2026 revision, before allowances.
Is MDCAT required for DPT?
Not as a national rule. HEC's DPT curriculum does not prescribe MDCAT and allows universities to set their own admission tests and higher eligibility. Khyber Medical University, for example, requires candidates to appear in the KMU-CAT. Always check the current admission notice of the university you are applying to.
How long is DPT in Pakistan?
DPT is a five-year degree of 10 regular semesters under HEC's current curriculum, with a maximum of 7.5 years to complete it. It includes at least 189 credit hours, six supervised clinical practices worth 22 credit hours, a three-credit-hour internship and a capstone or research project.
Is DPT a good field for girls in Pakistan?
DPT is open to female students and leads to work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, clinics, sports rehabilitation, teaching and private practice. The more useful questions are whether you are comfortable with hands-on patient care and clinical training, and what the university's campus environment, clinical affiliations and timings are like.
DPT vs Pharm-D: which is better?
They lead to different careers. DPT focuses on physical rehabilitation, movement and therapeutic treatment and is regulated by the Allied Health Professionals Council. Pharm-D focuses on medicines and pharmaceutical care and requires registration with the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan. Both are five years, so compare the work itself, the registration route and fees.
Can a DPT graduate open a private clinic?
Private practice is one of the routes open to physical therapists, subject to professional registration and local requirements for running a healthcare setup. Sort out registration and the legal requirements before committing to a clinic, and remember that a practice has to cover rent, equipment, staff and taxes before it pays you.
Can DPT graduates use the title Dr?
Yes, with a condition. HEC's 2025 curriculum allows graduates whose DPT degree is verified by HEC to use the prefix "Dr." provided the suffix "PT" also appears after the name, in the format Dr. [NAME], PT. It is a professional title and does not make the holder a medical doctor.
