Understanding degree levels

Undergraduate study in Pakistan is now built around the four-year bachelor’s degree, most commonly titled BS. Professional degrees keep their own titles — MBBS in medicine, BDS in dentistry, Pharm-D in pharmacy, DVM in veterinary medicine, LLB in law.

Engineering is the one area where the title genuinely confuses people. BE, BSc Engineering and BS Engineering are the same qualification; universities differ only in house style, and all three lead to Pakistan Engineering Council registration provided the specific programme is PEC-accredited. What is not equivalent is engineering technology. A B.Tech, or a degree titled “BS … Engineering Technology”, falls outside PEC’s definition of an engineering qualification and does not lead to registration as an engineer. Because almost everything is now titled “BS”, the word that actually distinguishes them is Technology, not the prefix.

At postgraduate level, MS and MPhil are both two-year research-oriented master’s degrees and are treated as equivalent for admission to a PhD. MSc may refer either to a legacy two-year master’s or to a taught postgraduate degree depending on the institution. Doctoral study normally requires an 18-year qualification, coursework, a comprehensive examination and published research.

Which fields dominate

Engineering is by some distance the largest discipline in the catalogue, followed by computer science, business, the natural sciences, arts and social sciences. That reflects where Pakistani universities have concentrated their capacity rather than where graduate demand necessarily sits, so it is worth looking at employment outcomes for a field rather than at how many places are available in it.

The same degree is not the same everywhere

A programme title tells you less than you would hope. Across this catalogue, fees for the same degree title differ by more than three-fold between institutions, entry requirements differ in wording and substance, and — for engineering — accreditation status differs by campus. That is why each programme page lists the universities that teach it alongside their individual entry requirements, duration and fees, rather than presenting a single national figure that would be wrong nearly everywhere.
