BA-LL.B (Honours) is an integrated undergraduate law degree combining liberal arts education with professional legal training. It is the qualifying route into the legal profession, and programmes are accredited by the Pakistan Bar Council and recognised by the Higher Education Commission.

What You’ll Study

Programmes run around 146-148 credit hours — heavier than a standard bachelor’s degree, reflecting the combination of law and non-law coursework. Legal subjects cover constitutional law, criminal law, contract and tort, property, corporate and commercial law, international law, jurisprudence and legal research and writing. The non-law component draws on history, politics, economics and philosophy, on the reasoning that good lawyers need context as well as doctrine.

Becoming a Practising Lawyer

The law degree alone does not permit practice. Graduates must enrol with a provincial bar council and complete its requirements — including the bar examination and pupillage or training conditions — before appearing in court. Requirements are set by the Pakistan Bar Council and provincial bars and are periodically revised, so confirm the current position with the relevant bar council rather than relying on general summaries.

Career Scope & Salary in Pakistan

Law graduates work in corporate and commercial law firms, in-house legal departments at banks and corporations, litigation practice, the judiciary and judicial service, regulatory bodies, and the civil service, as well as development and human rights organisations.

Earnings vary widely by firm tier and city. Reported figures for fresh graduates and lawyers with up to two years of experience commonly fall around PKR 70,000-120,000 per month at mid-tier firms, rising to roughly PKR 120,000-180,000 at large corporate firms and higher at multinational organisations, with Karachi generally the strongest-paying legal market ahead of Islamabad and Lahore. Independent litigation practice is far more variable, often starting low and depending heavily on reputation built over years. These are aggregated estimates from published salary guides rather than official figures.

Admission Requirements

Intermediate or A-Levels (or an IBCC-certified equivalent), plus the admission test used by the university concerned — LUMS runs its own SAT-style paper-based test and also accepts SAT scores. Humanities and social science programmes generally weight writing and critical-reasoning ability heavily. Check each university’s admissions page for the current cycle.
