The LLM (Master of Laws) is a graduate law degree for law graduates and practising lawyers seeking advanced training in legal research, writing and analysis — commonly taken to specialise, to move toward academia, or to strengthen credentials for corporate and international practice.
What You’ll Study
Coursework combines advanced legal research and writing with specialised seminars in areas such as corporate and commercial law, constitutional and public law, international and comparative law, human rights, environmental law, maritime law or intellectual property, usually culminating in a substantial dissertation.
Career Value in Pakistan
An LLM is most valuable in three situations: moving into legal academia, where it is the standard qualification for teaching and the route toward doctoral study; specialising in a technical practice area such as corporate, tax, competition, environmental or intellectual property law, where depth genuinely differentiates; and strengthening credentials for in-house counsel and international or development-sector legal roles.
It is worth being clear about what it does not do: an LLM is not a substitute for bar enrolment and practical experience. Litigation practice in Pakistan is built primarily on court experience and reputation, so for those intending to litigate, time in practice generally counts for more than an additional degree. Corporate practice rewards specialisation more directly — published salary guides put lawyers at large corporate firms around PKR 120,000-180,000 per month in early years with considerable progression thereafter, though these are aggregated estimates varying by firm tier and city.
Admission Requirements

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an LLM worth it in Pakistan?
It is most valuable for moving into legal academia, specialising in a technical area such as corporate, tax or environmental law, or strengthening credentials for in-house and international roles. For litigation, court experience and reputation matter more.
Can I do an LLM without a law degree?
No — an LLM requires a prior law degree, typically a minimum of 16 years of education including that degree. It is a specialisation qualification rather than an entry route into law.
