An MSc in Mechatronics & Control Engineering is a two-year postgraduate degree specialising in the integration of mechanical systems, electronics, control and computing — the engineering behind automation and robotics.

What You’ll Study

Coursework covers advanced control systems, robotics and kinematics, embedded and real-time systems, sensors and instrumentation, system modelling and simulation, and industrial automation.

Career Scope in Pakistan

Industrial automation is the primary destination as Pakistani manufacturers modernise to compete on quality and cost — factory automation, PLC and SCADA systems, process control and motion control. Other paths include robotics development, defence and aerospace systems, automotive electronics, and university teaching.

Control systems depth is the differentiator at postgraduate level: many engineers can wire and program a PLC, but far fewer can model a system and design a controller that performs predictably.

Entry requirements

Entry normally requires a relevant bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of around 2.5 out of 4.0, together with the GAT (General) or an institutional equivalent where the university requires one.

One point is worth checking before you enrol. The MSc title is used two different ways in Pakistan: at some institutions it is a legacy two-year master’s following a two-year bachelor’s, and at others it is a taught postgraduate degree following a four-year bachelor’s. The distinction matters because doctoral admission requires an 18-year qualification. Confirm with the university which structure its MSc follows, and whether the degree it awards satisfies that requirement, if you intend to continue to a PhD.

Choosing where to study

For a research-oriented postgraduate degree, supervisor availability in your intended area matters more than the institution’s general reputation — ask before applying rather than after admission. Where a programme offers both a thesis and a coursework-only route, the thesis route is the safer choice if you may continue to doctoral study.

For engineering programmes, note that Pakistan Engineering Council accreditation applies at undergraduate level and attaches to a specific programme on a specific campus. Postgraduate engineering study does not carry the same accreditation requirement, but PEC registration as an engineer depends on the accredited status of the bachelor’s degree that preceded it.

Evening and weekend programmes are widely available for working students. Where one is offered, confirm that the qualification awarded is identical to the regular-stream degree and is not differentiated on the transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does postgraduate mechatronics add over a bachelor's?

Control systems depth in particular — many engineers can program a PLC, but far fewer can model a system and design a controller with predictable performance, which is what distinguishes postgraduate-level automation work.
