An MSc in Textile & Materials Engineering is a two-year postgraduate degree combining textile technology with materials engineering — for advanced work in Pakistan’s largest export industry and in technical textile applications.
What You’ll Study
Coursework covers advanced fibre science, yarn and fabric structure and mechanics, textile chemistry and coloration, technical and functional textiles, textile composites, testing and quality engineering, and sustainable textile processing.
Career Scope in Pakistan
Textiles are Pakistan’s largest export sector and manufacturing employer, but the industry competes largely on cost in commodity products. The strategic opportunity lies in moving up the value chain — technical textiles for industrial, medical, protective and automotive applications carry substantially higher margins than basic apparel fabric.
Graduates work in R&D and product development at textile mills, technical textile development, process optimisation and quality management, sustainability and compliance — increasingly required by international buyers — and university teaching and research.
Entry requirements
Entry normally requires a relevant bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of around 2.5 out of 4.0, together with the GAT (General) or an institutional equivalent where the university requires one.
One point is worth checking before you enrol. The MSc title is used two different ways in Pakistan: at some institutions it is a legacy two-year master’s following a two-year bachelor’s, and at others it is a taught postgraduate degree following a four-year bachelor’s. The distinction matters because doctoral admission requires an 18-year qualification. Confirm with the university which structure its MSc follows, and whether the degree it awards satisfies that requirement, if you intend to continue to a PhD.
Choosing where to study
For a research-oriented postgraduate degree, supervisor availability in your intended area matters more than the institution’s general reputation — ask before applying rather than after admission. Where a programme offers both a thesis and a coursework-only route, the thesis route is the safer choice if you may continue to doctoral study.
For engineering programmes, note that Pakistan Engineering Council accreditation applies at undergraduate level and attaches to a specific programme on a specific campus. Postgraduate engineering study does not carry the same accreditation requirement, but PEC registration as an engineer depends on the accredited status of the bachelor’s degree that preceded it.
Evening and weekend programmes are widely available for working students. Where one is offered, confirm that the qualification awarded is identical to the regular-stream degree and is not differentiated on the transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are technical textiles?
Textiles engineered for functional performance rather than appearance — industrial, medical, protective, automotive and geotextile applications. They carry substantially higher margins than commodity apparel fabric and represent the value-chain opportunity for Pakistani textiles.
