About
NED University of Engineering & Technology is Karachi’s principal engineering university and one of the oldest engineering institutions in Pakistan, with an unusually broad engineering catalogue spanning civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, materials, textile, petroleum and computing disciplines.
Degree Programs
The university runs an unusually wide set of engineering departments — civil, urban and infrastructure, petroleum, environmental, earthquake, mechanical, textile, industrial and manufacturing, automotive and marine, electrical, computer and information systems, electronic, telecommunications, chemical, materials, metallurgical, polymer and petrochemical, biomedical and food engineering — alongside architecture and planning, computer science and software engineering, and departments of mathematics, chemistry, physics, English linguistics and economics and management sciences.
Several of these are rare in Pakistan. Earthquake engineering as a dedicated department, urban and infrastructure engineering, polymer and petrochemical engineering, and food engineering are each offered by very few institutions nationally.
Programmes
Undergraduate provision is four-year Bachelor of Engineering degrees across the engineering departments, a five-year Bachelor of Architecture, and four-year BS degrees in computing, sciences, English linguistics, economics and finance and development studies.
Postgraduate provision is distinctive: alongside conventional MS programmes, NED runs 2.5-year M.Engg. degrees for technical specialisation and MEM (Master of Engineering Management) degrees aimed at engineers moving into management. Doctoral programmes run across most departments. The full catalogue is listed below.
This university offers 18 engineering programmes. PEC accreditation is granted to a specific programme at a specific university — a degree accredited elsewhere is not automatically accredited here — so confirm the status of your chosen programme directly with the Pakistan Engineering Council before enrolling.

History
The institution traces to 1921, when it was founded as the Prince of Wales Engineering College to train the civil engineers building the Sukkur Barrage — one of the largest irrigation works of its era. It later became the NED Government Engineering College, named for Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw, and in March 1977 was upgraded to full university status under an Act of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh.
That origin still shows in its character: NED was built around solving a specific national infrastructure problem, and civil and water-related engineering remain among its strongest departments a century later.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is NED University of Engineering & Technology recognized by HEC?
Yes. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan lists NED University of Engineering & Technology as a recognised institution, which means its degrees can be attested by the HEC and are accepted for further study and public-sector employment. Recognition applies to the institution; individual programmes may additionally require accreditation from a professional council.
Is NED University of Engineering & Technology private or government?
NED University of Engineering & Technology is a public-sector institution. Public institutions generally charge lower fees than private ones because they receive government funding, and admission is correspondingly more competitive on merit.
What entry test is required for admission to NED University of Engineering & Technology?
Engineering admission normally requires an entry test — the ECAT in Punjab, an ETEA test in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, or an institutional test elsewhere — alongside HSSC pre-engineering results. Confirm the current requirement on the institution's own admissions page, since criteria and closing dates change each cycle.
Does HEC recognition mean every programme at NED University of Engineering & Technology is accredited?
No. HEC recognition confirms the institution is chartered to award degrees. Individual programmes in regulated fields need separate accreditation — the Pakistan Engineering Council for engineering, PMDC for medicine and dentistry, the Pakistan Bar Council for law, NCEAC for computing. A programme can sit inside a recognised institution without holding that professional accreditation, so check the specific programme before enrolling.
Where is NED University of Engineering & Technology located?
NED University of Engineering & Technology is located in Karachi, Sindh. Full address and contact details are listed above; the official website is www.neduet.edu.pk.
