Pharm-D Scope in Pakistan: Salary, Careers and the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree

If you are considering pharmacy after FSc Pre-Medical, the Pharm-D scope in Pakistan is much wider than standing behind a pharmacy counter. Graduates work in hospitals and clinical pharmacy, community pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturing, quality assurance and control, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, research, teaching and government.
The degree is a five-year professional qualification, but what your career looks like depends almost entirely on which of those sectors you enter, and on one thing most students check too late: whether your institution is recognized by the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan.
Short answer: the Pharm-D scope in Pakistan
Pharm-D leads to hospital and clinical pharmacy, community pharmacy, manufacturing, quality assurance and control, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, research and government work. Indeed puts the average pharmacist salary at Rs 47,039 a month, updated 16 September 2026, while government posts are advertised at grades such as BPS-17. Recognition by the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan matters more than any fee comparison.
What is Pharm-D?
Pharm-D stands for Doctor of Pharmacy. It is a five-year professional degree in medicines, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice.
The HEC Pharmacy Curriculum 2025, which the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan publishes, sets the program at a minimum of five years and a maximum of seven, extendable by a further year only with the approval of the university’s statutory body. Its scheme of studies runs to 192 credit hours over 10 semesters.
Three degree requirements sit outside ordinary coursework, and none can be substituted with extra courses:
- A clinical pharmacy clerkship worth 3 credit hours.
- A field experience or internship worth 3 credit hours, running six to eight weeks.
- A capstone project worth 3 credit hours, supervised and graded by a faculty member.
Students must also complete three international certifications over the five years. These are not credited, but they are a condition of the degree, and the department is meant to steer you toward ones the market actually values.
Is Pharm-D a medical degree?
Pharm-D is a professional healthcare degree, not an MBBS. A pharmacist is a medicines specialist: dispensing, counselling patients, medicine safety, procurement and storage, drug information, clinical pharmacy, production or regulatory work, depending on the role.
The word “Doctor” describes the level of the professional degree. It does not make a Pharm-D graduate a physician or allow them to practice medicine.
Pharm-D replaced the older four-year B.Pharm as the standard pharmacy qualification in Pakistan, and the change brought clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice into a curriculum that had been weighted toward pharmaceutical science. That is why the degree now carries clerkships and hospital-facing subjects that a B.Pharm did not.
What you study
This is HEC’s 2025 scheme of studies. Universities arrange courses slightly differently, but the progression from basic sciences to pharmacy practice and clinical work is fixed.
| Semester | Credit hours | Main courses |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 18 | Physical Pharmacy I, Organic Chemistry I, Biochemistry I, Physiology I, Functional English |
| 2 | 20 | Physical Pharmacy II, Organic Chemistry II, Biochemistry II, Anatomy and Histology, Physiology II |
| 3 | 18 | Drug Delivery Systems and Formulation Science I, Pharmacology and Therapeutics I, Pharmacognosy (Basic I), Pathology, Basic Pharmaceutical Microbiology |
| 4 | 19 | Drug Delivery Systems II, Applied Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Immunology, Artificial Intelligence in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Pharmacognosy (Basic II) |
| 5 | 20 | Pharmacognosy (Applied), Pharmaceutical Analysis I, Pharmacology and Therapeutics III, Hospital and Community Pharmacy |
| 6 | 20 | Pharmacognosy (Advanced), Dispensing and Social and Administrative Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Analysis II, Pharmacology and Therapeutics IV |
| 7 | 20 | Industrial Pharmacy I, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics I, Clinical Pharmacy I, Pharmaceutical Quality Management System |
| 8 | 19 | Industrial Pharmacy II, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics II, Clinical Pharmacy II, Pharmaceutical Quality Control, Pharmaceutical Management and Marketing |
| 9 | 18 | Pharmaceutical Technology I, Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science I, Medicinal Chemistry I, Advanced Clinical Pharmacy I, Clinical Pharmacology |
| 10 | 20 | Pharmaceutical Technology II, Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science II, Medicinal Chemistry II, Advanced Clinical Pharmacy II, Bioethics, Capstone Project |
Notice how the degree splits. The first half is pharmaceutical science, the second half adds industrial pharmacy, quality systems, regulatory science and clinical pharmacy. Those later subjects map directly onto the sectors that hire.
Pharmacy Council of Pakistan recognition
Check this before you pay anyone.
The Pharmacy Council of Pakistan is the statutory regulator for pharmacy education and practice under the Pharmacy Act 1967. Its directory currently lists 223 recognized Pharm-D institutions, each with its affiliation and approved seats for morning and evening programs, and the council reports 63,875 registered pharmacists nationally.
One detail that catches graduates out: the council states that a pharmacist licence is issued by the provincial pharmacy council, not the federal one. Registration and licensing are separate steps from graduating.
Before applying anywhere, confirm that the university is recognized by HEC, that the specific institution and the campus you will actually attend appear in the PCP directory against Pharm-D, and that the program provides the clinical and practical training the curriculum requires. The directory changes, so check it again close to admission rather than trusting an old list.
Pharm-D scope in Pakistan: where pharmacists work
Hospital and clinical pharmacy. Medicine supply, storage and dispensing, prescription review, drug information and pharmacovigilance. Clinical pharmacy takes this further into patient-level medication management alongside doctors, and it is the area the current curriculum pushes hardest.
Community pharmacy. Dispensing, counselling patients, record keeping and inventory. Responsibilities vary by employer and by provincial rules.
Pharmaceutical manufacturing. Pakistan has a large manufacturing sector, and it hires Pharm-D graduates into production, formulation, validation, documentation, research and development and supply roles. This suits people who prefer laboratory and plant work to patient contact.
Quality assurance and quality control. Quality control is testing and laboratory work; quality assurance is systems, documentation and compliance. Both build into specialized careers around good manufacturing practice and validation.
Regulatory affairs. Companies need people who understand product registration, dossiers, licensing and dealings with the regulator. The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan sits at the center of this, and regulatory roles exist both inside DRAP and in the companies that file with it. This is one of the most overlooked routes out of a pharmacy degree.
Medical affairs. Scientific communication, product information, medical education and liaison with clinicians. Postgraduate qualifications matter more here as you move up.
Sales and marketing. Medical representative and product executive roles are a common entry into the industry, and they reward communication and commercial skill rather than laboratory ability.
Government. Public hospitals, health departments and regulatory bodies employ pharmacists, with posts advertised in Basic Pay Scale grades.
Academia and research. Teaching and research after an MPhil or PhD, in a discipline where universities are still expanding pharmacy faculties.
Pharm-D salary in Pakistan
There is no single Pharm-D salary. Within the Pharm-D scope in Pakistan, sector decides pay far more than the degree does.
Private sector
Indeed’s Pakistan pharmacist page, updated 16 September 2026 and checked on 29 September 2026, gives an average base salary of Rs 47,039 a month from 185 reported salaries, in a range from Rs 27,470 to Rs 80,549.
Individual adverts on the same page on 29 September 2026 show the spread clearly: a trainee pharmacist role in Karachi at Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 a month, a Korangi position at Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000, a Sialkot role at Rs 35,000 to Rs 60,000, and a Lahore pharmaceutical company advertising Rs 50,000 to Rs 100,000.
That is the honest picture: entry-level community and trainee roles sit well below the average, while industry and specialized positions sit above it. Treat the average as an indicator built from reported salaries, not a scale.
| Where you work | Reported pay | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Trainee pharmacist, Karachi | Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 a month | Job advert on Indeed, seen 29 September 2026 |
| Community and retail pharmacy, Korangi | Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 a month | Job advert on Indeed, seen 29 September 2026 |
| Pharmacy role, Sialkot | Rs 35,000 to Rs 60,000 a month | Job advert on Indeed, seen 29 September 2026 |
| Pharmaceutical company, Lahore | Rs 50,000 to Rs 100,000 a month | Job advert on Indeed, seen 29 September 2026 |
| All pharmacists, national average | Rs 47,039 a month | Indeed, 185 reported salaries, updated 16 September 2026 |
| Government post at BPS-17 | Rs 54,140 to Rs 136,340 basic pay | Basic Pay Scales 2026, before allowances |
Private and government pay are different systems. A job board average describes what private employers report paying now, while a BPS figure is a published scale with allowances layered on top and annual increments built in.
Government
Government pharmacist posts are advertised in Basic Pay Scale grades, commonly BPS-17 for a graduate position. Under the Finance Division’s Basic Pay Scales 2026, BPS-17 runs from Rs 54,140 to Rs 136,340 in basic pay, with 20 annual increments of Rs 4,110.
Basic pay is not the package. Allowances vary by department and posting, and the Finance Division keeps revising them through its circulars, so read the advertisement and the current allowance rules before comparing a government offer with a private one.
Career progression and the Pharm-D scope in Pakistan
The first job matters less than the direction it starts. A graduate who joins a manufacturing plant in quality control builds toward quality systems, validation and eventually quality management. One who joins a hospital pharmacy builds toward clinical pharmacy and medication management. One who joins regulatory affairs builds a specialism that very few graduates have and companies consistently need.
Pay separates along the same lines within a few years. Specialized industry roles, regulatory work and senior hospital positions move well above the national average for pharmacists, while general community pharmacy tends to stay near the bottom of the range unless you own the business.
Postgraduate study is the other lever. An MPhil or PhD opens teaching and research, and targeted training in pharmacovigilance, good manufacturing practice, clinical pharmacy or regulatory science opens the specialisms that pay.
Pharm-D compared with DPT and BS Nursing
| Factor | Pharm-D | DPT | BS Nursing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Medicines and pharmaceutical care | Rehabilitation and physical function | Patient care and nursing |
| Duration | 5 years | 5 years | 4 years |
| Regulator | Pharmacy Council of Pakistan | Allied Health Professionals Council | Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council |
| Direct patient contact | Varies by role | High | Very high |
| Industry route | Strong: manufacturing, quality, regulatory | Limited | Limited |
| Own practice | Community pharmacy, subject to licensing | Physical therapy clinic | Limited and regulated |
If medicines, pharmacology, manufacturing or regulation interest you, Pharm-D is the degree with those doors. If rehabilitation and hands-on treatment appeal more, DPT is built around that. If you want continuous bedside care, nursing is the direct route. Our guide to the best field after FSc pre-medical sets all of them against the non-medical options.
Admission and eligibility
The Pharmacy Council sets the entry rule as FSc Pre-Medical with at least 60% marks, and HEC’s 2025 curriculum states the same: HSSC or an IBCC-recognized equivalent in the pre-medical group with at least a 60% cumulative score. Universities may also run their own entry test.
Capital University of Science and Technology, for instance, requires 60% in FSc Pre-Medical or A Levels plus its own admission test or an HEC-approved test, and sets its Pharm-D at 195 credit hours.
Check each university separately. Minimum marks, entry test, merit formula, deadlines and PCP status differ, and the last of those is the one that cannot be fixed after admission.
Can you do MBBS after Pharm-D?
No, not as a progression. Pharm-D does not convert into MBBS. If medicine is the goal, you have to meet MBBS admission requirements and enter through that route, which means MDCAT and the PMDC admission rules. Choosing Pharm-D as a back door to medicine is a five-year mistake.
Where to study: Pharm-D universities by city
UniAssist records Pharm-D at 16 universities, with duration, eligibility and published fees on the Pharm-D universities and fees page. Fees differ sharply between public and private institutions, and several universities charge per credit hour rather than a flat semester fee, so compare them there against the PCP directory entry for the same campus.
Pharm-D is not concentrated in one city. The directory entries fall across the major university cities as follows:
| City | Universities on UniAssist |
|---|---|
| Karachi | 4 |
| Islamabad | 3 |
| Lahore | 3 |
| Peshawar | 2 |
| Gujrat | 1 |
| Kohat | 1 |
| Multan | 1 |
| Sialkot | 1 |
Two universities in different cities can sit at opposite ends of the fee range and still hold the same recognition, so build a shortlist by city first, check each campus against the Pharmacy Council directory, and only then compare cost.
Skills that improve your prospects
The degree is the entry ticket. What separates graduates is what they can do: clinical pharmacy practice, pharmacovigilance, regulatory documentation, good manufacturing practice, quality systems, medical writing, research methods and data analysis. Strong written English matters more than students expect, because regulatory dossiers and medical information are written documents.
Internships are the cheapest way to find out which sector suits you, and industry internships in particular show how production, quality, regulatory and commercial departments actually work together.
The bottom line
The Pharm-D scope in Pakistan is broad, and it rewards a deliberate choice of sector far more than it rewards the degree title. Hospital and clinical pharmacy, manufacturing, quality, regulatory affairs, medical affairs and government all draw on the same qualification and pay differently.
Two checks matter before you enroll: that the specific institution and campus appear in the Pharmacy Council’s directory for Pharm-D, and that you understand licensing runs through the provincial council after you graduate. Compare universities and fees on the Pharm-D program page, and estimate your admission position with the merit calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pharm-D vs B.Pharm: what is the difference?
B.Pharm was the older pharmacy degree structure in Pakistan. Pharmacy education moved to the five-year Pharm-D model, with greater emphasis on clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice. HEC's 2025 curriculum sets Pharm-D at a minimum of five years and a maximum of seven.
DPT vs Pharm-D: which is better?
They lead to different healthcare careers. DPT focuses on rehabilitation, movement and physical therapy, while Pharm-D focuses on medicines, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy practice. Pharm-D also opens manufacturing, quality and regulatory routes that DPT does not. Your interests and preferred work environment should guide the comparison.
Is Pharm-D good for the future?
Pharm-D leads to hospital and clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturing, quality assurance and control, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, community pharmacy, research and government. Outcomes vary by sector, experience, specialization and location, so the sector you choose matters more than the degree title.
Can I do MBBS after Pharm-D?
Pharm-D does not automatically qualify a graduate for MBBS. Anyone who later wants to study medicine must meet the applicable MBBS admission requirements, including MDCAT, and enter through that admission process.
What is the scope of Pharm-D for females in Pakistan?
Female Pharm-D graduates work in hospitals, community pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies, regulatory affairs, quality control and assurance, research and teaching. The Pharmacy Council directory also shows that many institutions run separate morning and evening programs, and some are women-only, which is worth checking alongside the career path itself.
What is the salary of Pharm-D per month in Pakistan?
There is no fixed national Pharm-D salary. Indeed reported an average pharmacist salary of Rs 47,039 per month in Pakistan from 185 reported salaries, updated 16 September 2026, in a range of Rs 27,470 to Rs 80,549. Government posts are advertised in Basic Pay Scale grades such as BPS-17, which starts at Rs 54,140 in basic pay under the 2026 revision, before allowances.
