BS Botany (also offered as Plant Sciences) is a four-year undergraduate degree studying plants — their structure, physiology, genetics, classification and ecology — underpinning agriculture, forestry, conservation and plant-based industry.
What You’ll Study
Coursework covers plant anatomy and morphology, plant physiology, plant taxonomy and systematics, genetics and plant breeding, plant pathology, ecology and environmental botany, and increasingly plant biotechnology and tissue culture, with laboratory and field work and a final-year project.
Career Scope in Pakistan
Agriculture is central to Pakistan’s economy, which gives botany more practical relevance here than in more industrialised economies. Graduates work in agricultural research institutes and crop improvement programmes, seed companies and plant breeding, plant pathology and crop protection, forestry and rangeland management, environmental consultancy and conservation, herbal and pharmaceutical raw material industries, and teaching.
Plant pathology and crop protection are areas of steady demand given persistent pest and disease pressure on major crops. Research careers require postgraduate qualification, and agricultural research organisations are significant employers of MPhil and PhD holders.
Admission Requirements
Intermediate (FSc/ICS) or an equivalent qualification in a relevant group, plus the admission or aptitude test used by the university concerned. Merit is normally calculated from academic record and test score. Check each university’s admissions page for the current cycle.
