About

The University of Peshawar is the oldest and largest general university in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, teaching across roughly forty departments, institutes and constituent colleges spanning the sciences, social sciences, arts, Islamic and oriental studies, management and law.

Degree Programs

Teaching is organised into faculties of Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Numerical and Physical Sciences, Management and Information Sciences, and Islamic and Oriental Studies.

Departments include economics, political science, international relations, sociology, social anthropology, social work, psychology, criminology, gender studies, journalism and mass communication, history, archaeology, philosophy, English and applied linguistics, and language departments covering Urdu, Pashto, Persian and Arabic. On the science side, departments and institutes cover physics, mathematics, statistics, chemistry, botany, zoology, geology, geography and geomatics, environmental sciences, biotechnology and microbiology, computer science, electronics and pharmacy.

Several units are regionally distinctive. The Area Study Centre, the Pakistan Study Centre, the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies and the Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management all reflect the province’s particular research needs, and the Department of Archaeology sits close to the Gandhara heritage of the region.

Programmes

The university offers four-year BS degrees across most departments, alongside MSc, MPhil and PhD programmes, and professional degrees through its Law College and Institute of Education and Research. Constituent colleges — Jinnah College for Women, the College of Home Economics, Quaid-e-Azam College of Commerce and University College for Boys — teach both intermediate and degree-level programmes.

Provision varies by department, with some offering the full BS through PhD progression and others more limited, so confirm availability in your specific discipline with the department directly.

History

The university was founded in 1950, three years after independence, as the first university in what was then the North-West Frontier Province. It has since served as the parent institution for much of the province’s higher education: several institutions that are now independent universities began as departments or colleges within it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is University of Peshawar recognized by HEC?

Yes. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan lists University of Peshawar as a recognised institution, which means its degrees can be attested by the HEC and are accepted for further study and public-sector employment. Recognition applies to the institution; individual programmes may additionally require accreditation from a professional council.

Is University of Peshawar private or government?

University of Peshawar is a public-sector institution. Public institutions generally charge lower fees than private ones because they receive government funding, and admission is correspondingly more competitive on merit.

What entry test is required for admission to University of Peshawar?

Requirements vary by programme. Most undergraduate intakes are based on HSSC or an equivalent qualification, and many institutions add their own entry test or interview. Confirm the current requirement on the institution's own admissions page, since criteria and closing dates change each cycle.

Does HEC recognition mean every programme at University of Peshawar is accredited?

No. HEC recognition confirms the institution is chartered to award degrees. Individual programmes in regulated fields need separate accreditation — the Pakistan Engineering Council for engineering, PMDC for medicine and dentistry, the Pakistan Bar Council for law, NCEAC for computing. A programme can sit inside a recognised institution without holding that professional accreditation, so check the specific programme before enrolling.

Where is University of Peshawar located?

University of Peshawar is located in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Full address and contact details are listed above; the official website is www.uop.edu.pk.
